Rochester’s origin was that of a fortress town but subsequently became a ‘transit’ town with goods being loaded and landed in the port, and people breaking their journeys to and from London, Kent and mainland Europe. As a consequence every King & Queen has passed along Rochester High Street with the inevitable outcome that Rochester has often provided the stage and cameo actors for many events that turned out to be of national and international importance. For instance the Siege of Rochester Castle, the Restoration of Charles II and the abduction of James II, all contributed to the shaping of our democracy - which in turn influenced the shaping of democracies across the World.

Last but not least, Rochester owes a huge debt to Charles Dickens who featured in many of his stories people and places and probably events, that he witnessed as youngster in exploring Rochester and its surrounds.

So as you tread in the footsteps of Monarchs and Dickens as well as his characters, try to look beyond the commercialised Rochester of today. Try to reflect on the significant events that were played out in and around the centre of Rochester and what life must have been like in a transit town / busy port of bygone years.
